The Last of the Lucky

The Last of the Lucky stems from an encounter in the streets of Havana in 2014, when Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt met a man who turned out to be one of Fidel Castro¹s former private photographers. In a city lacking most photographic equipment, the photographer helped them find film for their camera. Three rolls named Lucky were put at their disposal, accompanied by the following words: ³These are the last rolls of Cuba.²

COSMOS Arles Books
Edition 2 - A digital tradition

Cosmos is a satellite space at the heart of the Rencontres d’Arles, taking place during the opening week of the festival, from the 4th until the 9th of July 2016.
Having been an independent space first, and since last year a part of the official program, Cosmos - created and directed by Olivier Cablat and Sebastian Hau – is a laboratory of contemporary practices in photography, edition and visual art. Since eight years multiplicty and singularity have been it’s guiding principles, as much as celebrating books and editions as one of the central mediums in photography since more than fifteen years.

Since the nineties bookdealers such as Dirk Bakker and Markus Schaden presented rare books and contemporary photobooks in parallel to the opening week of the festival in an equally independent iniative. Experts, collectors, artists and amateurs flocked to their tables to discover and buy the most interesting books available, often for the first time in France. And then in the beginning of the new century a new form of Books on Books, historical publications on photography and the printed page, opened up a parallel history of photobooks to a larger public.

In a recently published text David Campany confronts us with the provocative observation that the term photobooks was in fact never used before the year 2000, where under the pressure of the internet, blogs, online bookshops, forums, and discussions of those books on books a new terminology and understanding came into  existence. In such a way digital platforms have not only helped a growing interest in this traditional yet polymorphic object, the photobook, but also allowed several generations of artists to deepen their understanding of books and use them to their own intentions.
Thus traditional codes were broken, reappropriated, re-used in a wave of books of all sizes and formats.
This explosion of publishing practices often runs on several levels, via self-published books, microeditions, or with smaller publishers experimenting news ways of conceiving, producing and distributing books. Since 2009 Cosmos has accompanied these iniatives, by giving publishers a place to present, sell and discuss their work.

For the 8th edition of Cosmos we will celebrate multiplicity in bookmaking and publishing, from it’s most traditional and respected forms to it’s most experimental apparitions. We want Cosmos to be the central meeting place where the different points of view in photobook making, as much as affection and criticism can be shared and discussed. Up to 80 publishers will present their books, making Cosmos the largest fair of it’s kind for photobooks, from local iniatives to internationally renowned publishers, accompanied by a program of performances, conferences and panels, book signings and other book-related events. Our own projects, such as the PDF Award or our participative project Digital Horse will be presented in our Cosmos Office.

Digital and Horses (Cheval Digital)

Cosmos is happy to present its third and last iteration of our experimental participative trilogy. In 2014 we invited contributors from all over the world to participate in a facebook event called Poles and Bulls, and in 2015 created a second event Shadows and Flamingos.

The Horse is one of the symbolical animals of the Camargue, the Digital is the main vector of photographic transmission and distribution since at least fifteen years.

This year again we invite photographers, photohistorians, amateurs, professionals, to share with us their vision of the two categories - to help us think about the relationship between photography and the world we live in.

La fondation Jan Michalski pour l’écriture et la littérature

The Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature was inaugurated in 2004 on the initiative of Vera Michalski-Hoffmann in memory of her husband. Its mission is to support creation and help actors in the realm of writing in order to encourage the public towards the active practice of reading. Conceived as a little city unto itself, the Fondation Jan Michalski brings together, under a canopy, varied buildings sheltering diverse activities. The library—multicultural, multilingual, and open to all—today includes more than 50,000 works. The auditorium regularly hosts literary encounters, readings, and concerts, as well as theatrical performances. The foundation also has a dedicated space for temporary exhibitions presenting a new view of great authors’ bodies of work and initiating dialogue between artists and writers. A writers’ residence, designed to nurture their creativity, will be added in the future. The Jan Michalski Prize for Literature, awarded yearly since 2010, reinforces the scope of the foundation’s activity, each prize celebrating an exceptional work of world literature. Finally, the foundation provides grants for numerous literature-related projects.

Pour 20/20, IDEAT Magazine a invité 20 designers de renommée internationale à retourner sur les bancs de l’école pour s’exprimer, sans contrainte, par la photographie.

20 images, compositions originales et personnelles, illustrant un souvenir d’écolier, produites pour cet évènement et exposées dans une ancienne salle de classe du Collège Frédéric Mistral. Ensemble, ces tirages uniques composent un livre ouvert sur la liberté de l’imaginaire et de la création par ceux qui façonnent l’art de vivre aujourd’hui.

Les oeuvres de l’exposition seront vendues aux enchères lors la rentrée des classes en faveur de l’association CC-FOR EDUCATION pour l’aide à l'apprentissage des enfants au Népal.



Established in 2012, amanasalto is a joint venture between amana inc. in Japan and Salto Ulbeek in Belgium. At its headquarters and the state-of-the-art printing studio in Tokyo, amanasalto manages the entire production processes for its publishing projects, including planning, manufacturing, and distribution of limited edition prints, portfolios, and premium photo books. The editorial and technical teams work in close collaboration with internationally renowned photographic artists and archives. Our strength lies in a combination of editorial rigour, mastery of traditional printing methods, and continuous development of new printing techniques and production systems.


IMA began as a magazine in March 2012 to promote its core philosophy of ‘Living with Photography’—looking at, reading about, studying, buying, and decorating with art photography. IMA has become well regarded for its profiles of photographers around the world who push the art form in new and exciting directions, as well as features on notable trends in the field of art photography. After successfully establishing a strong online presence, in 2014 the magazine opened IMA Concept Store, a gallery-bookshop-café located right in the heart of Tokyo’s Roppongi district. The store curates photography exhibitions offering novel approaches and perspectives, and hosts a variety of events including workshops led by some of today’s top creatives. IMA has even launched its own publishing brand—IMA photobooks—to give it the freedom to plan and publish photobooks that meet its own sensibilities, as well as to foster the development of today’s brightest young Japanese photographers.

It is an honour for the Swiss Confederation to be a partner of the one of the world’s most important annual photography events. For us, it is also an obvious pairing. In our country, this art is as varied as the cultures that make up Switzerland, a combination of pride in our origins and openness to the world. As the Rencontres’ programme highlights, photography in Switzerland concerns not only renowned institutions, but also schools, artists, and festivals. And all the publishers who reflect this diversity. By becoming a special partner of COSMOS Arles Books, which celebrates these publishers, we participate fully in an ambitious project, at the intersection of all forms of photography. As a space to gather, to eat (a little), to discuss (a lot), and above all to get to know each other, the Nonante-Neuf will be a lively photography library.
