COSMOS Arles Books
Edition 1 - Experimenting continuity
COSMOS Arles books’ creative direction has been entrusted to Olivier Cablat and Sebastian Hau and Sam Stourdzé, director of the Rencontres de photographie d’Arles. dedicated to photobooks, this new satellite space in the rencontres d’Arles has hosted more than heighty international publishers.
A true locus of conviviality, exchange, and sharing, COSMOS Arles books also features ten experimental exhibition projects, lectures, pop-up stores, book signings, meet-the-artist sessions, and a multitude of events around the photobook.
Founded and, since 2009, directed by Olivier Cablat and Sebastian Hau, for seven years Cosmos has been a laboratory of expression for emerging practices in photography, publishing, and the visual arts. It celebrates the multiplicity and singularity of photographic practice with a special interest in publishing, the privileged creative medium for artists and photographers over the past fifteen years . from the start, the event has confirmed the desire not to restrict photographic and artistic practice to a single type of distribution . for its three first editions, published (horizontal) photography was combined with exhibited (vertical) photography. There were later added, in the same modular space, digital installations, experimental archives, lectures, presentations of participative projects, live printing, performances, etc.
Over the years, COSMOS has become an essential meeting place for collectors, curators, photographers, publishers, and those, simply, who love photography. In this creative atmosphere they discovered, often for the first time in france, artists like Katja Stuke & Oliver Sieber, Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Doug Rickard, Ricardo Cases, Thomas Mailaender, Raphaël Dallaporta, Edmund Clark, Eric Tabuchi, Stephen Gill, Archive of Modern Conflict, Jo ractliffe, Olivier Metzger, Gael Peltier, Jean-Paul Cuir, Laura Bielau, and Thomas Manneke.
Main partners : Swiss Confederation, fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature, amanasalto & IMA.
With support from Actes Sud, Tectona, CBC group, Atelier Sunghee Lee.

La fondation Jan Michalski pour l’écriture et la littérature
The Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature was inaugurated in 2004 on the initiative of Vera Michalski-Hoffmann in memory of her husband. Its mission is to support creation and help actors in the realm of writing in order to encourage the public towards the active practice of reading.
Conceived as a little city unto itself, the Fondation Jan Michalski brings together, under a canopy, varied buildings sheltering diverse activities. The library—multicultural, multilingual, and open to all—today includes more than 50,000 works. The auditorium regularly hosts literary encounters, readings, and concerts, as well as theatrical performances. The foundation also has a dedicated space for temporary exhibitions presenting a new view of great authors’ bodies of work and initiating dialogue between artists and writers. A writers’ residence, designed to nurture their creativity, will be added in the future.
The Jan Michalski Prize for Literature, awarded yearly since 2010, reinforces the scope of the foundation’s activity, each prize celebrating an exceptional work of world literature. Finally, the foundation provides grants for numerous literature-related projects.

Amanasalto
Established in 2012, amanasalto is a joint venture between amana inc. in Japan and Salto Ulbeek in Belgium. At its headquarters and the state-of-the-art printing studio in Tokyo, amanasalto manages the entire production processes for its publishing projects, including planning, manufacturing, and distribution of limited edition prints, portfolios, and premium photo books. The editorial and technical teams work in close collaboration with internationally renowned photographic artists and archives. Our strength lies in a combination of editorial rigour, mastery of traditional printing methods, and continuous development of new printing techniques and production systems.
IMA
IMA began as a magazine in March 2012 to promote its core philosophy of ‘Living with Photography’—looking at, reading about, studying, buying, and decorating with art photography. IMA has become well regarded for its profiles of photographers around the world who push the art form in new and exciting directions, as well as features on notable trends in the field of art photography. After successfully establishing a strong online presence, in 2014 the magazine opened IMA Concept Store, a gallery-bookshop-café located right in the heart of Tokyo’s Roppongi district. The store curates photography exhibitions offering novel approaches and perspectives, and hosts a variety of events including workshops led by some of today’s top creatives. IMA has even launched its own publishing brand—IMA photobooks—to give it the freedom to plan and publish photobooks that meet its own sensibilities, as well as to foster the development of today’s brightest young Japanese photographers.

Swiss Confederation
It is an honour for the Swiss Confederation to be a partner of the one of the world’s most important annual photography events. For us, it is also an obvious pairing. In our country, this art is as varied as the cultures that make up Switzerland, a combination of pride in our origins and openness to the world. As the Rencontres’ programme highlights, photography in Switzerland concerns not only renowned institutions, but also schools, artists, and festivals. And all the publishers who reflect this diversity.
By becoming a special partner of COSMOS Arles Books, which celebrates these publishers, we participate fully in an ambitious project, at the intersection of all forms of photography. As a space to gather, to eat (a little), to discuss (a lot), and above all to get to know each other, the Nonante-Neuf will be a lively photography library. More than a showcase for Switzerland, this space will be a platform for exchange and discovery. The meeting point between the Swiss spirit and the enthusiasm of Arles.

Awakening emotions, seeking out beauty, capturing the light of Provence … it was only natural for Tectona to become a partner of the Rencontres d’Arles.
As a creator of outdoor furniture, Tectona breathed new life into the brand by giving designers the mission of renewing its range. Design is the sign of a vital, dynamic brand that dares to innovate and challenge itself. Design brings forth creative solutions and looks to the future of the brand by analysing our habits and needs.
Thanks to the combination of elegance and quality in materials and treatments, Tectona has established itself over nearly forty years as the benchmark for fine outdoor furniture. Forms of classic simplicity, materials chosen for their beauty and ability to defy the years, faultless quality produced by skilled craftsmanship allied with cutting-edge technology: all these contribute to the timeless style of Tectona. Bespeaking luxury without ostentation, Tectona furniture is not for the moment, but for the long run.
Open your senses to the spellbinding light of Provence: Tectona furniture, provided to the Rencontres d’Arles for the nonante-neuf terrace, invites visitors to slow down, relax, and absorb the marvellous encounters of this festival.
